Letters and Sounds in Pre-k 106

We are eating our way through the Alphabet.

Learning about the Alphabet is sweet and tasty.

As we learned about the Letter Ll, we tasted Lemons.
Thea enjoys her lemon snack and says," it tastes sour."

By the look on Aditi's face, she does not like lemons!!  Good girl for tasting!

Nora, said" I don't like lemons."

Elizabeth puckers up as she tries this snack!

Jaritza likes lemons and wants to eat more!

Anthony gives lemons a big thumbs down!! He said" I really don't like lemons."

F is for Froot Loops...mmm good!!

The blue table and green table anxiously wait to eat their special snack.

Milo made a happy face with his snack. Good thinking!!

Leslie decided to sort her sweet snack by colors!! Nice work!

Mrs. DeMaio happily shows the class our crunchy snack begins with the letter F!

In our unit, What Makes Us Special? We are learning all about one another as well as similarities and differences between us.

During Work Center Time, we are exploring new places and things,
and discovering what each of us love to do!

from his What Makes Us Special book
that he has been working on.

Pre-K 100 had an apple tasting!

We tasted three different types of apples Gala, Golden Delicious and Granny Smith.
Each child voted on their favorite type of apple.
Our Results were:
4 children liked Granny Smith Apples
 2 children liked Golden Delicious
9 children liked Gala Apples

We then created a bar  graph to record our findings.
We discussed that more children liked the Gala Apples instead of Granny Smith
and Golden Delicious.

We each voted for our favorite apple, then we made a graph to compare our findings!
Here is what we discovered:

                                       October

October’s Unit of Study is
“What Makes Us Special?”
In this unit, we'll be sharing and learning about what makes each of us special.
We will also be talking about the season of Fall, and noticing the many changes in the world around us.

Our "What Makes Us Special" study includes a home component. During the week of October 5th we will be sending home a large body outline of your child. Please work with your child to decorate this outline with pictures and words that represent things they love to do, places they love to go, people they love, and any other details that make them special. This is an fun opportunity for you to assist and encourage your children to talk about themselves.

On October 30th, we'll celebrate the end of this unit by presenting our  "What Makes Us Special" projects, as well as our All About Me Books, which we will be working on at the Writing Center during choice time this month.

In October, we also begin making time during the day to focus on Letters and Sounds.
Each week we'll focus on a different letter.

Week of October 5th- Letter “L”
Week of October 12th- Letter “F”
Week of October 19th- Letter “H”
Week of October 26th- Letter “P"

Children practice these letters and the sounds they make by singing songs, creating the shape of the letter from letter construction pieces, by "drawing" the letter in the air with their whole body, and by practicing proper formation on paper as well as on chalkboards and the ipad.

Pre-K 100 in October

     Fall has arrived
       in Pre-K 100!

During Read Aloud, we have been discussing the idea that school is a safe place where kids can play and learn together,  and our grown-ups go away and come back.

In Math we have been working hard on discussing the following:
How objects are the same and different and WHY?
   Ways to group/sort different objects
            -Color
            -Size/Shape
-Usage (markers and paper are used together)
            -Sorting into two groups

In Work Center Time we are continuing to develop social skills while working on writing readiness, math readiness, fine motor, and gross motor development.

In the morning we had Parents as Reading Partners to share our family books
and read with our parents.

The first day of Fall was Wednesday September 23rd.
We read a poem together about deciduous trees:

Deciduous Tree Poem
deciduous tree
A bouncy baby,
Black striped skunk,
skunk
Saw a leafless,
Brown tree trunk,
Daddy, daddy, tell me please,
Why certain trees,
Have no leaves?
Some trees are bare,
Very bald,
All their leaves,
Have felled and falled...
fall leaf
Daddy skunk,
Took a look,
Opened up his science book,
science book
Says right here,
Plain to see,
Deciduous
A type of tree…
Trees whose leaves have dropped and falled,
Deciduous,
Is what they’re called...

And we created our own deciduous trees to celebrate the beginning of Fall
